The basic difference between a warehouse and a distribution center can be found in the length of storage and immediate operation. A warehouse is usually used to store goods for longer periods of time, while distribution centers concentrate on faster turnover (or throughput) of goods. A distribution warehouse is a building and a place where items for distribution are stored. In other words, it serves as storage for products. A principal part in the order processing element and order fulfillment process, the distribution center is a facility that is usually smaller than a company’s main warehouse. It is used to receive, store temporarily, and redistribute goods, based on received customer orders.
